CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

To Alaska

"Ready?" I asked Tristan, whom smiled and nodded with his glee.

"I'm so excited!" Tristan bounded about. His carry-on around his shoulder was light. I was curious about the meager contents. His hair had grown longer over the months, and was almost long enough to tie back.

It had been so long since I was last on a plane that it made me dizzy walking down the jet bridge.

Somehow, we'd messed up with seats and wound up sitting apart. Tristan took refuge next to the window and I was at the aisle. A portly older woman was in between, but she was so exuberant and friendly that neither of us became bothered with her.

"Are you excited?" she asked. "I'll bet you two are just so darn cute together."

"Oh, we're not a couple," Tristan said with a smile on his face.

The woman scoffed. "You're joking. You look at him with such affection that I find it hard to believe."

Tristan blushed fiercely and looked out the window to hide.

"I'm Hilde." She chuckled toward me. "Are you really not a couple?"

"True story. He's just a good friend," I admitted to Hilde. Though her shining eyes bore into me, and I felt she could see the secret moments that I gave to myself some nights, thinking of Tristan.

"Well you're both stunning! If anything happens, you have my full support."

"Do you live in Alaska?" Tristan deflected any further line of questioning.

Hilde leaned in toward me. "He's so darn cute." Then Hilde turned toward Tristan, "I do. I live in Anchorage."

"You like it?"

"I love it! What do you do for work?"

Tristan shifted, "Service industry."

"Ah. That’s a very humble and respectable profession. I'm a teacher, myself."

"Do you enjoy teaching?"

"It's my life's calling. My husband, may he rest in peace, always said I was destined to share my knowledge. So here's a teacher's advice. Go live your life and make yourself happy. I can tell you're not happy. Blue eyes are like that, they show everything. What did you use to do?"

Tristan welled up at her questions. I reached for him, but was reminded of the woman next to me.

"Oh dear. I've overstepped. Forgive me." Hilde silenced and delved into a cheesy romance book.

About an hour into the flight Tristan conked out against the window. The way his head was positioned exposed the long line of his vulnerable throat. My eyes focused on the powerful thrum of his artery at the divot between his graceful collarbones. How it would feel to lick that smooth skin? I couldn't even imagine.

"Would you like to switch seats?" Hilde whispered, startling me from my stare at my friend.

"No, I'm okay," I replied.

"You sure? You're staring at him like you want to rip him apart." Hilde smiled and then put her hand on my knee. "I want everyone to be happy. Change with me so you can admire him, just like I would if I were given the opportunity."

No more words were needed. I changed with her, ducking down to avoid hitting my head on the overhead bins while we did our switch.
